Choosing Your Podcast Microphone

(with little to no money)

There is no way around it. In podcasting, audio quality is key. Whether you're recording at home, in a studio or on the go. Choosing the right microphone can make all the difference in the world to deliver crisp professional sound to your audience.

Here are a few tips about podcast microphones using equipment you probably already have.

1. MacBook Air Built-in Laptop Mic

When starting out or money is a challenge, you may need to rely on the built-in microphone on your laptop. While this mic is not ideal and often lack the clarity and depth needed for high-quality audio, you can still attempt to make it better. Most of you already have a laptop so start with that and as you make more money then get an external microphone.

Just go to System preferences, click on input and adjust the input level and volume.

2. Zoom Audio Recorders

I use this all the time. The Zoom audio recorder is portable and was originally created to record dictation and now can record a 5 piece band. The price can start at $60, depending on which version you purchase. I like the H6 but you can get a used H2 on the low for just a few dollars. Podcasting doesn't have to be confined to the studio. If you're conducting interviews in the field or recording live events, set the Format to PCM/WAV and input level to -12 and -20 dBFS for better sound quality. Record in the least crowded environment where there is as less wind as possible.

3. Your iPhone

Your iPhone is actually a powerful podcasting recording device. Most of us just use it incorrectly. To get better sound quality, point the microphone toward the source of sound without covering up the mic.

Here is an example of my podcast using some of these methods:

You don't need to spend a fortune to achieve better sound quality, but you do need to make an effort. With a few tricks, you can maximize the performance of your microphone you have available. Optimize your recording environment or experiment with microphone placement, before splurging on expensive equipment.
